When the Darkness Closes In: a reflection on current events

There is a song by Matt Redman called "Blessed by your name."

Two lyrics from the song stand out to me:

Blessed be Your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s ‘all as it should be’
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out
I’ll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord

and these lyrics inspired this creative piece:

——-

When the Darkness closes in

An Original piece by me

My heart is broken

A dark skinned man sells magazines as part of a scam door to door

in an affluent neighborhood where his actions will speak for all his people

this grieves me

A public defender is arrested by the police who supposedly are on her same team

when all she was doing was protecting one who was innocent till proven guilty

this grieves me

and then….

Churches are being burned in Niger

so many men women and children are simply mysteriously disappearing

conspiracy theories can’t keep up with the tragedies around the world

systematic atrocities are being perpetrated against those whose skin color isn’t white

or who aren’t born male

An islamic state is holding the world in fear

The Measles and Ebola viruses are spreading

An innocent mother of 3 was shot and killed in front of her children by a stray bullet 2 days ago 20 minutes away from me

Thousands of Men and Women and Children are being trafficked and enslaved

to work for us

it can really feel like the entire world is falling apart and the darkness is closing in.

Yet things actually were pretty bad way back when

when the Leviticus Laws were written –

Think about

if people weren’t committing such lewd acts

God wouldn’t need to write all those laws….

and even BEFORE then…. the world was so bad

that God had to reboot with a flood – and I quote:

“The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth,

and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil.

So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth.

It broke his heart.” (Gen 6)

We are living today by grace

when we all really deserve wrath

No the world is not as we THINK it OUGHT to be

But who are we to say what it OUGHT to be

Who are we to demand anything when we

already got a second chance, a third chance, infinite chances

We live today by grace

If the world was the way we THINK it OUGHT TO BE

perhaps we surely would have destroyed each other a long time ago

because the only way to make it perfect

is if we (as imperfect beings) are not living in it

Maranatha

Come Back Lord Jesus

Make the world right again

Until then

When the darkness closes in

Let me be a part of

breaking into the darkness

bringing glimpses of the Kingdom

living by GRACE

Blessed by your name
